- Abstract
This article discusses earlier masterpieces of painter Anthony Van Dyck that were copied by painter Thomas Gainsborough and his nephew and pupil Gainsborough Dupont. One of the three well-known copies made by Gainsborough was the copy of Van Dyck's image of the family of the 4th Earl of Pembroke. A copy made by Dupont and Gainsborough and the original portrait painted by Van Dyck found at Wilton House provides an opportunity to distinguish and compare the techniques between the master and his pupil. Both works have made confusion in the past.
