- Abstract
The article discusses a study to document trends in maternal overweight and obesity in Australia and to examine associations with pregnancy outcomes. The 12-year study between January 1998-December 2009 involved 75,432 women with singleton pregnancies who had pre-pregnancy body mass index data available and who gave birth in a maternity hospital in Brisbane, Queensland. It finds that maternal overweight and obesity are endemic issues associated with serious maternal and neonatal complications.
