- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in an experimental rat model of interstitial cystitis by measuring TNF-α which is one of the key mediators of the inflammatory response. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 24 Sprague Dawley rats were divided into sham (Transurethral intravesical injection with sterile distilled water), rats with interstitial cystitis (IC) (induced by transurethral intravesical injection with hydrochloric acid) and rats with interstitial cystitis + HBOT groups. After completion of experiments, bladders of all rats from all groups are removed surgically. TNF-α levels were measured by ELISA test kit. The data were analyzed using SPSS-15. RESULTS: We found TNF-α levels in rats with IC group higher than in sham group (p<0.01), reduced levels of TNF- α in group IC+HBOT comparing to group rats with IC without HBOT (p<0.01) and no difference between sham group and group IC+HBOT. CONCLUSION: In this study we have shown that HBOT may ameliorates the inflammation and is effective in healing process of interstitial cystitis disease. We concluded that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be useful in the treatment of interstitial cystitis.
