- Abstract
The Social History of Art, originally called The Social History of Art and Literature (Sozialgeschichte der Kunst und Literatur), was published in 1951, when Arnold Hauser (1892-1978) was fifty-nine. Although this first work of Hauser was later translated into seventeen languages and still maintains its importance in the literature, little is still known about its author; because Hauser stayed aloof from the intellectual community, except for Sonntagskreis, where he joined for a short time in 1910, he could not find a permanent position at any university, he was not interested in daily politics, he did not even mention the forced exile that his being Jewish required, and he just wanted to be known with his oeuvre. For this reason, it will be useful to consider again the life and works of the author, who received a lot of criticism for different reasons in different periods, in this process that The Social History of Art is published with its new translation from Kırmızı Publishing House.
