- Abstract
An essay is presented on concepts from the field of science and technology studies (STS) that have been introduced into design theory to challenge some of the commonly used methodological frameworks of human-centered design (HCD). Topics discussed include designers who might facilitate and translate knowledge across multiple stakeholders; investigation of the context through ethnographic methods; engagement with theories from STS; and STS as a means of improving the capacity of designers to play an important role in charting the ethical and political challenges posed by emerging technologies.
