- Abstract
This paper aims to stablish the characteristics associated with victimization for furt and theft in the state of Minas Gerais in 2009, based on personal characteristics and locational variables of the victimized individuals. In this way, the aim is to verify if there is a specific profile that makes these individuals more likely to become victims of crimes. Based on data from the PNAD 2009 "Victimization characteristics and access to justice" supplement, two probability models, Probit - one for each offense, were then estimated - which helped to build the different scenarios developed in the results. Thus, it is observed that, given a reference individual, the probability of victimization for both crimes increases for those males, unmarried, living in urban areas and with higher per capita income; And that among the variables that most affected the probability of occurrence of the accident, the results indicate the income and the location of the household as the most determinant. These characteristics corroborate with the theories of Lifestyle and Routine Activities, which argue that economically more attractive and socially more exposed individuals are more likely to be victims of crimes against property. In addition to these, other personal and local characteristics were introduced in the analysis, under which the results indicated that they affect differently the probability of victimization for each of the crimes treated.
