- Abstract
The health of an individual is inherently intertwined with the elements of the environment and the community in which the individual lives. However, improving health and wellbeing at the community level is fraught with challenges. After framing social and community dimensions of health, we highlight four cases of personal involvement by the authors focused on varying approaches and lessons learned regarding community engagement in the pursuit of improved health conditions. Two cases highlight successful project interactions and insights, but problems with long-term sustainability. Two other cases show the value of sustained resources, infrastructure, and relationships between researchers and community partners. Key components of community partnerships and engagement are offered to inform successful health promotion efforts.
