- Abstract
Based on the studies in Applied Linguistics in interface with discursive perspectives of language, we aim at (i) analysing representations of teachers of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) in initial formation regarding the 'knowing of Portuguese' both as a mother and foreign language, the processes of teaching and learning and of themselves as teachers of PFL; and (ii) investigating the voices which sustain these representations. Voices from traditional and contemporary pedagogical discourse and of academic and institutional discourse dialogue and confront each other and produce the representation that knowing Portuguese is to know the standard language and to communicate in different contexts. Concerning the teaching and learning processes, we observe the following representations: the non-coincidence of linguistics aspects causes difficulties in the learning of PFL; the comparative method contributes to the process of PFL teachinglearning; and PFL teaching is a place of innovation. When talking about themselves, the subjects project themselves as those who value the interest and the reality of students; transmit contents; and act as a cultural mediator.
