- Abstract
The article discusses a research on effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor treatment on erythropoietin levels. It references a study by B.Y.Y. Tam and colleagues in this same issue. Neutralization of VEGF has been observed in mouse and primate models, which resulted in a profound increase in the secretion of erythropoietin from the liver leading to enhanced generation of red blood cells and elevated circulating red blood cell counts. Erythropoietin is produced as compensatory mechanism to the diminished oxygen delivery and trophic endothelial activities brought about by VEGF inhibitors.
