- Abstract
A case of diffuse stercopurulent peritonitis due to the perforation of a colonic diverticulum secondary to a gastrointestinal barium study is reported. An emergency operation was performed and the patient is now doing well. Perforation of a diverticulum induced by impacted barium is a rare complication of gastrointestinal barium studies. However, it may be of critical importance to recognize this as a possible complication of barium ingestion, especially in patients with colonic diverticula. Once severe generalized stercopurulent peritonitis takes place, there is a high mortality rate. Copyright © 1992 S. Karger AG, Basel
