- Abstract
This aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing corn by citrus pulp in the starter on the performance and ruminal parameters of calves up to 60 days of age. The Holstein calves (n= 36) were used, of which 28 were used for analyzes of consumption and performance and 8 to study the parameters of ruminal fermentation and profile of blood glucose. At the end, 4 animals from each treatment were euthanized for ruminal analysis. The starter intake was different among treatments in 5 to 9 week of age, being higher for the group fed corn compound starter. The weight gain and blood glucose concentration were similar among treatments. The molar concentration of acetate, propionate, butyric, total VFA (volatile fatty acids), and rumen pH values did not differ among groups. Percentage of propionate was higher for calves fed corn-based diet and butyrate percentage was higher for animals with citrus pulp. Small alterations were found in the rumen epithelium of calves fed citrus pulp in the starter. The results suggest that citrus pulp is a coproduct with potential to be used in replacement of corn on starter for calves up to 60 days of age.
