- Abstract
Porcine contagious pleuropneumonia (PCP) is one of the major diseases of economic impact on the modern pig production. In this paper we evaluate the aptitude of acute phase proteins (APP) and the expression of cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10) to make an early diagnosis of infection with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App). Twenty pigs were intranasally inoculated with App. and other 20 pigs were used as control, being monitored from 0 to 72 hours post-infection (hpi). Infected animals showed typical lesions of PCP from 6 hpi onwards. Whereas we did not detect the presence of specific antibodies against App. along the study, the serum concentration of IL-6 increased significantly from 6 hpi, coinciding with the further increase in the concentration of APPs from the 24 hpi. The results demonstrate the diagnostic value of IL-6 together with the APPs to detect the early stages of the PCP.
