- Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the most common chronic pulmonary disorder, is recognized as a major public health problem. Chronic illness means fundamental changes in life-style and in quality of life and places chronic stress on the individual. The effects of chronic illness can create long-lasting conflicts and psychosocial situations requiring adaptation. Individuals are faced with the life-long task of coping with their illnesses. However, as Strauss (1975) pointed out, knowledge of the problems of living with chronic illness is limited. The impact of COPD on male patients has been addressed (Agle & Baum, 1977; Barstow, 1973; Dudley, Glaser, Jorgenson, & Logan, 1980; Fagerhaugh, 1973). However, no study that described the problems women experience in living with COPD was located. Therefore, this study explored the problems women experience in living with a chronic illness such as COPD.
