- Abstract
In the globalization debate, it is commonly argued that globalization as an increasingly influential phenomenon has been weakening the idea of democracy and the practice of democratic governance. These assertions are centered especially on the notions of democratic participation and relevant community, two essential principles of the idea of democracy, and point out the influence on these principles of the transformations in the traditional conceptions of border, territoriality, and sovereignty. In this work, I analyze these claims of the globalists in the context of democracy and democratic governance with regard to nation-state, sovereignty, and welfare policies, and conclude that the prospect of democracy is not as hopeless as these assertions go.
