- Title
WILLIAM COWPER'S BULLFINCH POEM: A MINOR SUB-GENRE?
- Authors
Sherbo, Arthur
- Abstract
This article presents a literary analysis of poet William Cowper's poems on the death of bullfinches in the eighteenth century in England. It is believed that Cowper was possibly the last to write in this minor sub-genre of dead bullfinches. Two of these bullfinch poems were anonymously contributed to the "Gentleman's Magazine." According to the author, Cowper was well-read, versed in the classics, and hence may have known about bullfinch poetry. Some of Cowper's classical poems on bullfinch talked about dead birds including parrots and nightingales.
