- Abstract
Fluoride salt system is a better system for preparing rare earth metals and their alloys from molten salt electrolysis of rare earth oxides. In order to clarify the solubility of Yb2O3 in fluoride molten salt system(LiF-CaFl2), the variable solubility of Yb2O3 in LiF-CaFl2 molten salt was determined by isothermal saturation method. The dissolution mechanism of Yb2O3 in LiF-CaFl2 molten salt was analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD). The results showed that the time required for Yb2O3 to dissolve in the molten salt of LiF-CaFl2 is about 2.5 h at 1353 K, and the solubility of Yb2O3 increases linearly with the increase of temperature at the temperature range of 1293 to 1413 K. The phase analysis of water quenching cooling products after dissolution of LiF-CaFl2-Yb2O3 system was carried out. The results showed that the dissolution process of Yb2O3 in molten LiF-CaFl2 includes physical dissolution, however the dissolution of the fluorination process is still the main form.
