- Abstract
Since their introduction in the early 1960s, effect pedals have become a crucial part of the signal chain of the rock guitarist, shaping sonic aesthetics and musical practice. While the digital revolution made them seemingly obsolete, there remains a diverse array of brands and manufacturers ranging from one-person workshops to big companies. The »productivity« of what I call the »effectscape« is kept alive by a highly engaged group of consumers. They meet online, discussing new and old effect pedals. The »effectscape« is a social and economic world built around these musical devices. This paper takes an exploratory dive into selected German language forums to investigate the role that brands and brand categories, especially the term »boutique«, play in terms of this niche of rock music culture. I use my data set to further insights into the sonic and social practice of rock musicians and how these are mediated through music technology.
