- Abstract
The article provides insights into the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 in the U.S. According to the author, the bill gives the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Commerce Department responsibility for whales, porpoises, dolphins, seals and seal lions, while the Secretary of the Interior is responsible for polar bears, walruses, manatees and sea otters. Among the major provisions of the bill include the establishment of a permit system to authorize the taking and importing of marine mammals and the issuance of regulations on the taking and importing of marine mammals.
