- Abstract
The European Union's energy policy foresees reaching, by the year 2020, a binding global target of 20% renewable energy. Increasing air quality, energy security, as well as increasing employment and developing the business environment are the main objectives to be achieved by promoting renewable energies. Geothermal energy is part of the renewable energies class, i.e. green energy. Geothermal resources include the heat retained in the soil at small depth, the warm water found a few kilometres from the Earth's subsurface and the extremely high temperature of the melted magma located deep in the ground. In this respect, statistics confirms that Romania has a high potential for geothermal energy, being considered the third country in Europe, after Greece and Italy. The studies and analyses carried out in this regard by the authors of this work highlight that the location of these geothermal resources in Western Romania (Banat, Apuseni Mountains, etc.) could be an important opportunity for the development of the local communities in the area, benefiting from geothermal resources.
