- Abstract
The Maya area is probably the best-studied cultural area of the world. Its attraction for scholars in all anthropological disciplines endures; no wonder, then, that the work of these scholars is so visible within the steady and sizable outpouring of publications on indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America. Ethnographies written by anthropologists on the basis of their fieldwork among modern Maya peoples represent roughly a fourth of the overall Mayanist production, itself clearly dominated by archaeology. The article analyzes various literary works in Maya studies from Guatemala, Mexico and Belize.
