- Abstract
Active suspension systems can improve ride comfort and driving safety. However, conventional active suspension systems have high energy consumption because of continuous actuator operation. This study proposes a continuous damping control (CDC)-based high-efficiency active suspension system. Ride performance is controlled by the actuator only when active performance is required, and by CDC in other cases. For implementing this concept, active suspension generic models and controllers were developed. In addition, control logic to calculate the actuator force considering the mechanical arrangement of the suspension components was established. The active suspension controller can improve energy efficiency by distinguishing between the active and semi-active modes. Only CDC was used for driving when required force was within the control region of the continuously variable damper. Outside the control region, the actuator was operated to improve the ride performance. The performance of the proposed model was analyzed for random road and bump road driving conditions. Ride performance was analyzed using the RMS value of the vertical acceleration, and efficiency was analyzed by comparing the magnitudes of the actuator force generated during driving. Consequently, a suspension structure most suitable for the proposed active suspension control system was determined.
