- Abstract
Introduction: In otorhinolaryngology, some urgencies and emergencies require surgical outcomes for resolution. Considering the pattern of severity and that they are common practices, most have low morbidity and mortality. Objective: To analyze the number of urgent and emergency cases requiring surgical intervention in a specialized otorhinolaryngology service in the city of São Paulo. Methods: Epidemiological, retrospective study, carried out in patients between 13 and 88 years old, between September 2018 - March 2022. Data collection took place through the analysis of electronic medical records and subsequent statistical study of the data. Results: We counted 187 patients between 13 and 88 years old, of which 77 were women and 110 were men. In statistics, there is a higher prevalence of peritonsillar abscesses (35.2%) and nasal fractures (27.8%). It is observed that peritonsillar abscesses are frequent in the mean age of 37 years, in which they had a history of recurrent tonsillitis or refractoriness to antibiotic therapy. Nasal fracture cases were relevant in male patients (69.2%), aged 38 years, mostly victims of violence, which make them more prone to traumatic experiences, in addition to contributing to the prevalence of epistaxis (24.0 %) in this age group. Conclusion: The main surgical indications for otorhinolaryngological urgencies and emergencies were peritonsillar abscess, nasal fracture and epistaxis. In this way, the need for qualified initial care is observed, as well as the importance of the specialist in the emergency care service for an effective conduct and a good prognosis for the patient.
