- Title
Penguin colony decimated by volcanic eruptions.
- Abstract
The article reports that one of the largest colonies of Gentoo Penguins in Antarctica was decimated by volcanic eruptions during the last 7,000 years, according to a study the British Antarctic Survey and published in the journal "Nature Communications." Highlights include chemical analyses of penguin guano extracted in sediment cores from Ardley Island, estimation of the population numbers throughout the period, and opportunity for scientists to reconstruct past changes in colony size.
