- Abstract
Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH), for decades, has been one of the major public health problems in Brazil. The aim of this study was to report the historical trajectory of Brazilian public health policies for the care of SAH. This is an integrative review with a survey of articles, conducted in June 2011, in three indexed databases: Literatura Latino-Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). After reading the summaries of the 41 identified articles, available electronically in full, it was found that only 14 fit the pre-established inclusion criteria. From the results it became clear that Brazil began its public policies for hypertension in the late 1980s, and undertook a change in the care paradigm with the implementation of the Unified Health System and the Family Health Program. However, despite several public policies having been introduced, the early diagnosis, treatment, and control of SAH in primary health care is still difficult.
