- Title
Global change: Carbon in idle croplands.
- Authors
Henebry, Geoffrey M.
- Abstract
The article discusses a modelling study that was intended to explore the trajectories of carbon accumulation, both above and below ground, following land abandonment. This study was applied to approximately 171,000 square kilometres in the agricultural regions of Ukraine, Belarus, and the European region of the Russian Federation, due to the fact that the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 instigated the most widespread episode of land use change in the twentieth century. The researchers linked models of crop production with models of ecosystem processes to calculate the amount of carbon sequestered as grasslands replace agricultural lands.
