- Title
ALCOTT AND TOCQUEVILLE: TOWARD A TEXTUAL CONJUGATION.
- Authors
DOLIS, John
- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the books "Democracy in America" by Alexis de Tocqueville and "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. According to the author, Alcott may have been familiar with de Tocqueville's book, and her novel discusses many of the same issues. It is suggested that her phrasing closely mirrors de Tocqueville's own in a passage about gender roles in the U.S. Other topics include family relationships, division of labor, and marriage.
