- Abstract
This article focuses on a study related to the in vitro differentiation capacity of human periosteal cells and bone marrow stromal cells. Human bone marrow stromal cells can differentiate toward the osteogenic lineage in vitro, generate bone tissue in vivo and support the repair of large segmental defects in clinical cases. JPC proliferate faster but have a delayed and overall reduced capacity to differentiate toward the osteogenic lineage in a monolayer in vitro system. osteogenic lineage in a monolayer in vitro system. On the basis of these results it is questionable whether JPC are a valuable alternative to BMSC for a cell-based bone repair.
