- Abstract
This article compares the patterns of criminal homicide in Chicago, Illinois and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This analysis is designed to provide evidence concerning a point raised by Wolfgang (1958: 5) regarding his study: ''Whether the general or specific conclusions regarding criminal homicide in Philadelphia may be projected beyond the present ... remains the task of future research to confirm or deny." The general hypothesis underlying this analysis is that the relationships found in Wolfgang's investigation of criminal homicide in Philadelphia will be observed in a similar analysis in another metropolitan city in the U.S., Chicago. Eight tests of this hypothesis are presented; these involve comparisons of the criminal homicides in Chicago and Philadelphia in terms of the race and sex of the victims and offenders, the extent of interracial and cross-sex homicides, the method of inflicting death, the temporal pattern, location of the offense, involvement of intoxicants, the previous victim-offender relationship, and the incidence of victim-precipitated criminal homicides.
