- Abstract
Die Abtei Vaucelles (Diözese Cambrai) erhielt im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert 80 Urkunden über Abgabenfreiheit; sie sammelte diese Urkunden in ihrem Archiv und erlangte schließlich von Papst Innozenz IV. eine gene relle Befreiung von Abgaben an Laien. Für die Abtei war Abgabenfreiheit demnach ein zentrales Anliegen. Die Untersuchung der Urkunden zeigt, dass die meisten von ihnen von der Abtei selbst abgefasst wurden; dabei wurde großer Wert auf die Formulierungen gelegt, insbesondere auf das Ausmaß der gewährten Befreiung und selbst auf die Art der Waren, die eingeschlossen waren. Raoul, Herr von Coucy, stellte vor seinem Aufbruch zum Kreuzzug im Jahr 1190 für 16 unterschiedliche Abteien, darunter auch Vaucelles, Urkunden über Abgabenfreiheit aus. Diese Urkunden wurden von einem Kleriker Raouls verfasst, und auch sie zeugen von einer großen Sorgfalt in der Formulierung. Die vergleichende Analyse beider Urkundenbestände, die sich im übrigen gegenseitig ergänzen, lässt erkennen, in welchen Punkten die Urkunden zur Abgabenfreiheit auf eingehenden Verhandlungen zwischen Grundherrn und Abtei beruhten - Verhandlungen, von denen uns nur das Ergebnis überliefert ist.
