- Abstract
A clinical case of a 45-year-old male with the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the lip in a 20-year history of oral lichen planus is presented. The invasive character and anatomic location of the cancer required a planned staged reconstructive surgical approach. A discussion of literature reports of the malignant potential of lichen follows. Even though rare, it is now well recognized that up to 10% of long-standing lichen planus can manifest his premalignant character and evolve into invasive squamous cell carcinoma.
