- Abstract
In summary, the present study suggests that a concentrated pattern of physical activity within 1-2 days per week may offer a significant CV benefit, which is comparable with that of a regular and evenly distributed pattern and is observed even at lower levels of activity than those recommended by current guidelines. Key points This is a retrospective analysis of the UK Biobank accelerometer sub-study aiming to explore the association between a "weekend warrior" (WW) pattern of physical activity (i.e. moderate-to-vigorous physical activity mostly achieved within 1-2 days) and cardiovascular (CV) outcomes, as compared with a regular and evenly distributed physical activity.[1] Participants providing a full week of physical activity data derived from a wrist-based triaxial accelerometer between June 2013 and December 2015 were included. Measured CV outcomes were incident atrial fibrillation (AF), myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), and stroke during a median follow-up period of 6.3 years (IQR, 5.7-6.8).
