Progress in preventing cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases.
- Authors
Kahn, Jessica A.; Hillard, Paula A.
- Abstract
The article discusses various aspects of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and its clinical consequences. The condition can be transmitted through genital-genital or oral-genital contact. Risk factors of the disease include the early age of sexual initiation, number of sexual partners and partner's number of sexual partners. Cervical ectopy, which increase vulnerability to HPV, develops during puberty when the columnar epithelium lining the endocervix extends onto the ectocervix. The Papanicolaou smear was designed to detect or remove severe cervical intraepithelial neoplasia to prevent progression to cervical cancer.
