- Abstract
The article focuses on the European Global and Regional Earth-System Monitoring Using Satellite (GEMS) project which is funded within the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) framework, initiated by the European Commission (EC) and European Space Agency (ESA) in Europe. The primary objective of the European GEMS project is to develop a comprehensive monitoring and forecasting system for atmospheric composition on both global and regional scales from the combined expertise of research communities in Europe. It highlights the advantage of satellite remote sensing on the influence of anthropogenic emissions in atmosphere composition on a global scale. It explores the detailed structure and progress of the project since March 2005.
