- Abstract
The article discusses the perceptions of residents of a peripheral community in the city of Caxias do Sul-RS (Brazil) in relation to tourism. The research conducted a bibliographic review, covering historical aspects that characterize tourism as a practice of the elite, and theoretical approaches that ignore the exclusion of the majority of people. Eleven residents of the community known as the Cooperativa Habitacional Marianinha de Queiroz were interviewed, using the techniques of Collective Subject Discourse (DSC). Analysis of the discourses revealed that the interviewees associate tourism with: (a) inclusion, stating that traveling on vacation is for fun and leisure; and (b) exclusion, recalling that tourism is a pleasure reserved for people with higher purchasing power. According to Milton Santos, exclusion affects the development of citizenship; in these terms, we consider that the exclusion in tourism also contributes to this citizenship deficit.
