- Abstract
Treatment consisted of surgery in 16 patients (5.7%), RAI in 70 (24.7%) and external beam radiation in one (0.3%) due to tracheal involvement in an elderly patient. Some previous studies reported that partial thyroidectomy and avoidance of RAI treatment were associated with increased risk of recurrence[3]; however, these studies included patients with different stages of PTC. When Jonklaas et al[7] compared patients with stage 1 disease by type of treatment, they found that those who received total thyroidectomy and RAI had a higher rate of recurrence than those treated with total thyroidectomy alone.
