- Abstract
Overweight and obesity have become a global public health problem. The factors associated to its evolution are related to demographic, socioeconomic, cultural, genetic and life style changes, among other factors. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests using the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a parameter which allows the estimation of an individual's nutritional status. The present study aims to describe the nutritional status of students at public schools of the Puqueldon municipality, Los Lagos region, Chile. 275 students were tested, corresponding to 67.4% of the total number of students enrolled at public schools in 2013: 157 men (57.1%) and 118 women (42.9%), between 4 and 16 years of age. The obtained results showed an average for overweight and obesity of 49.7% for men and 57.2% for women. The results obtained from 50.9% of the total sample allow the conclusion that the subjects are at risk for obesity or Morbid obese.
