Opioids for Management of Breakthrough Pain in Cancer Patients.
- Authors
Potter, Michael B.
- Abstract
The article highlights an evidence in the efficiency of opioids in relieving breakthrough cancer pain. In a study conducted among 134 patients, it was found that oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate, a fast-acting opioid, has delivered more relief than with immediate-release morphine. It was also found that such drug can alone relieve cancer pain without long-acting opioid which is contrary to the recommendation of the European Association of Palliative Care.
