- Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a public health problem. DM has been associated with increased production of free radicals, which can induce oxidative DNA damage. Recently the use of medicinal plants has increased for their potential as alternative therapies, within plants with antioxidant effect it is noteworthy the Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). The objective of this study was to determinate the effect of Rosemary aqueous extract intake on the DNA damage in patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DM2). Methodology: 16 individuals with DM2 from the community of San Pedro, Zacatecas were studied, they gave theirs authorization by informed consent. Buccal mucosa samples were taken at 0, 15, and 30 days of treatment with the rosemary aqueous extract (5g of Rosemary leaves in 1L of water per day). The number of micronucleus (MN) and nuclear abnormalities were determined via fluorescence microscopy. Results: DNA damage decreased as the time of consumption of Rosemary extract increased (1.19 ± 0.65 MN at zero days, 0.33 ± 0.48 MN at 15 days, and 0 MN at 30 days of treatment). Additionally a decrease also occurs in cytotoxicity markers, specifically condensed chromatin and karyorrhexis. Conclusions: According to the results, the Rosemary aqueous extract presents anti-micronucleogenic and cytoprotective effect in patients with DM2.
