- Title
Priorities for Priorities: Where to Locate the First FLONAs?
- Authors
Magnusson, William E.
- Abstract
This article comments on the article "Priority Areas for Establishing National Forests in the Brazilian Amazon." This article presents a case for creating national forests or Florestas Nacionais (FLONAs) in the Amazon. It asserts that the assessment made by the article is the first step toward a more detailed land-use planning by the federal government of Brazil. It criticizes the scale of the analysis presented by authors of the article for allowing evaluation of current human occupation. It suggests to start with areas facing the greatest short-term potential threats instead of starting with potential areas for FLONAs that are labeled high priority for conservation.
