- Abstract
PLA has aroused industrial and scientific interest in recent years, mainly due to its biodegradable character. However, PLA is brittle and displays low impact strength which has motivated researches to improve its toughness. The present work aims to produce PLA/EVA blends, and to investigate the EVA effect on PLA as well as the annealing which carried out at 90 °C for 5 h and provided increase in crystallinity as observed by DRX and DSC, in the elastic modulus (tensile), impact strength, HDT, VST, shore D hardness and contact angle. Nevertheless, there were losses in elongation at break, no changes on the tensile and flexural strengths. Upon EVA addition, subtle increase was verified in viscosity as observed by torque rheometry, and new bands on FTIR spectra evidencing increase of PLA crystalline peaks. Regarding the fracture surfaces, SEM images illustrated upon addition of 30% EVA there was co-continuity of phases. Summing up, annealing together with EVA addition to PLA are efficient procedures and provide better performance to PLA compounds with wider range of properties and applications.
