- Title
Aphorism and the Counsel of Prudence in Early Modern Statecraft: The Curious Case of Justus Lipsius.
- Authors
Jones, David Martin
- Abstract
An essay on the character of the political thought espoused by 16th-century Belgian humanist and philologist Justus Lipsius is presented. It evaluates Lipsian counsel in several of his works including "Politica," "De Constantia," and "Physiologiae Stoicorum." The aphoristic style Lipsius pioneered is evaluated in light of a belief in the value of the aphoristic style for the historian of ideas. The rhetorical purpose of Lipsius' works of theologico-political counsel is also discussed.
