- Abstract
The Life-history of two species of Brown Algae, a croustaceous (Ralfsioid) and Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngbye) Link, from Puerto Deseado (Patagonia Argentina), has been followed in culture. Cultures from swarmspores of unilocular sporangia of "Ralfsia sp." in nature, develop into haplostichous disc. These crusts form polistichous erect fronds (Scytosiphon phase) similar to Scytosiphon pigmaeus Reinke, with plurilocular organs at maturity. Its zoospores give rise to discoid thalli identical to mother plant. The zoospores of Scytosiphon lomentaria develop parthenogenetically into small haplostichous crustaceous discs or filamentous prothalli giving off erect fronds with plurilocular organs. This species exhibits that there is no alternation of dimorphic generations in our cultures.
