- Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate by indirect immunofluorescence (IFI) the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in pigs, to identify by PCR the presence of T. gondii in smoked pork sausages and to relate an epidemiology and the transmission of toxoplasmosis to humans through an "One Health" approach integrating human health, animal health and safe food consumption. 50 swine blood serum samples and 18 samples of smoked pork tongues were evaluated. In the indirect immunofluorescence test (IFI) 8% of the animals were positive for T. gondii and in the PCR all samples were negative. Despite the negative results in the PCR, the presence of pigs seropositive for T. gondii sent for slaughter and further industrialization of the carcass demonstrates a potential risk to public health, whether in the inadequate consumption of fresh pork or in meat by-products, thus reinforcing the "One Health" approach in toxoplasmosis and its contribution to the epidemiology and transmission of T. gondii to humans.
