- Abstract
This study determines the electrophysiological effects of intravenous magnesium and lidocaine. Standard microelectrode techniques were used to study the effect of magnesium and lidocaine on action potential duration (APD) and on barium-induced spontaneous action potentials in canine Purkinje fiber preparation. It was found that magnesium shortens APD and suppresses the firing frequency of barium-induced automaticity. Lidocaine shortens APD and has no significant effects on action potentials due to barium-induced abnormal automaticity.
