- Abstract
In this article the authors examine factors that have impeded efforts made by the U.S. Social Security Disability Insurance system (SSDI) to encourage disabled workers to return to work. The research conducted observed that there were two factors that discouraged a return to work. One element was the unwillingness on the part of the disabled to relinquish benefits paid by SSDI. A second factor was that a combination of SSDI payments and medical benefits allowed workers collecting these perks to take a type of early retirement.
