- Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the effects of 12 weeks of functional training on maximal dynamic strength, muscle power and quality of life of pre-frail older women. The sample consisted of thirty subjects (mean age of 63.6 ± 4.0 years, 29.9 ± 5.5 kg/m², which were randomly divided into Functional Group (TF: n = 15) and Control Group (CG: n = 15). To verify functionality, maximum dynamic strength (FDM) and muscle power (PM) tests were applied in the actions of pushing (bench press), pulling (Rowing) and squatting (Half squat). Quality of Life (QV) was assessed using the WHOQOL BREF structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a 2x2 ANOVA with post hoc SIDAK test to check differences between groups. At the end of 12 weeks, when compared to GC, TF showed statistically significant increases in the following tests: supine (PM: p = 0.008; 17%); rowing (FDM: p = 0.007; 24%) (PM: p = 0.004; 23%); Half Squat (FDM: p = 0.004; 19%) (PM: p = 0.004; 22%) and QV (p = 0.004; 14%). In view of the sample and the conditions analyzed, functional training seems to be effective in improving maximal dynamic strength, muscle power and quality of life in pre-frail older women.
