- Abstract
The lack of knowledge of alphabetic writing as we know it today produced fear and admiration in the Indians of the New World, since they could not understand how the Spaniards managed to communicate at a distance through paper. Such a situation led them to believe that letters had a soul and were capable of discovering secrets. In these pages we will analyze six versions of a story that describe the interaction between the natives and letters, trying to see, on the one hand, how fear and admiration as a result of their ignorance are present in them and, on the other, that the way in which each author presents his version depends on the function it plays within the general narrative in which it is inserted.
