- Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of Kung Fu gymnastics on the physical fitness of middle-aged and older adult women 50 to 70 yrs old, compared to Tai Chi. Twenty-one adult women were included in this study: 13 in the Kung Fu gymnastics group, and 8 in the Tai Chi group. Both groups performed 60 min of exercise twice a week for 6 wks. Before and after the intervention, grip strength, standing long jump, modified sit-and-reach, side steps, and sit ups were measured. Two-way repeated measure ANOVA revealed with no significant interaction in the others. However, significant main time effects (prevs. post-test) were observed for the standing long jump, modified sitand-reach, side steps, and sit ups. The results show that Kung Fu gymnastics for 6 wks improved the physical strength of middle-aged and older women. This improvement in strength was found to be comparable to that gained from doing Tai Chi. Kung Fu gymnastics is an appropriate and effective program for improving the physical fitness of middle-aged and older women.
