- Abstract
The article discusses the study conducted by social workers and social work students on the development of awareness of the nuances of heterosexism and homophobia in the U.S. The objective of the study is to locate thematic categories from student responses that reflected attitudes toward lesbians and gay men and support of their rights and to investigate whether these categories represented distinct attitudes as expressed by responses on the quantitative measures. It analyzes and compares the responses to qualitative and quantitative items of 147 heterosexual. The research suggests the need to move beyond the argument for ethnic-centered practice and cultural competence.
