- Abstract
Urban management has changed dramatically in theory and in practice in the last two decades. The growth of urban centers, the increased knowledge of technology, and the expansion of government have combined to produce marked alterations in local governments. With this transformation of local government comes an increased need for professional administrators to manage cities. Of necessity, then, one should evaluate and modify one's educational programs to meet the needs of potential urban managers. Authors recognize the difficulty inherent in educating effective urban managers in the face of complexity and change. This difficulty is increased when formal ties between academics and practitioners are insufficient and/or absent. According to authors, this article is an attempt to share the processes and results of an Urban Management Education grant awarded to the Mankato State Urban and Regional Studies Institute, Minnesota and the Minnesota City Management Association by International City Management Association/National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
